Topping everyone’s list of stressful experiences is moving—to either a different residence or a new office location. It’s not hard to understand why. Loose ends have to be tied up, and final frantic cleaning tasks must be completed. Your belongings are very valuable to you, so it is important that they arrive at the destination in one piece. Moreover, because hiring a moving company isn’t something people do frequently, it can be hard to find the right one, and find it quickly.

It’s all too tempting to call the number in the ad that promises the lowest rates in town, but Brent Stone, co-owner of Good Stuff Moving, cautions against that.

As Stone warns, “Don’t hire the cheapest moving company. If I were hiring a moving company, I would ask if they have a physical location, ask for references, and ask if they are insured—not only for household goods, but more importantly, if they’re insured to be on your property, or if they get hurt.”

Stone also recommends working with a company that—like his—will provide an onsite estimate. Having a representative come to your space for an estimate can give you a far more accurate assessment of your total expenses, which is very important for a long-distance move.

If saving money is a priority, Stone recommends prepacking as much as possible. Good Stuff Moving is a flexible company that can provide as much or as little service as you need. It can do everything for you, including all the packing and materials (boxes, paper, bubble wrap, etc.). Or, it can move just the heavy items, and let the customer move the smaller ones.

Either way, Stone’s biggest piece of advice is to be prepared: “The more prepared you are, the quicker it’s going to go, the cheaper it will be, and the less stressful it will be.”

Based in St. Paul, Good Stuff Moving specializes in short-notice availability. Because business varies by season, Stone recommends calling two or three weeks in advance for a summer move; winter scheduling can be more flexible.

Stone points out, “99 percent of the time, you are going to get one of the owners who answers the phone—that’s me or Paul.”
