Looking for something to do this weekend? The Minnesota RollerGirls are hosting a rare public All-Star bout against the Rocky Mountain RollerGirls of Denver, Colorado.
The All-Star team is made up of the best skaters from each of the Minnesota RollerGirls four home teams: the Atomic Bombshells, the Dagger Dolls, the Garda Belts, and the Rockits. During the winter ‘home’ season, these four teams compete round-robin style, and choose the best players from each team to travel the USA during the summer months, representing the Minnesota RollerGirls and competing against the All-Star teams of other leagues.
The All-Star team eventually enters a playoff tournament in the fall, competing for a spot in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s International Championship Tournament held in November. The Rollergirls typically host one All-Star game each year at home in Saint Paul to kick off the All-Star season, and that event is this Saturday, April 9 versus the Rocky Mountain RollerGirls All-Star team.
Saturday’s bout brings the unique opportunity to see high level, Division 1 women’s roller derby here in Minnesota. Division 1 teams are the top 40 roller derby teams in the world, as determined by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association ranking scheme. The Minnesota RollerGirls are currently ranked 12th and Rocky Mountain are 16th.
It’s all going down on Saturday, April 9th at the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and bouts start at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets start at $15, with Beatles tribute band Hard Day’s Night playing at halftime. Family friendly and good clean fun!
