Halloween is just around the corner. For one night, you can be whoever you want to be, and everything is fair game. For some, it’s a night to see and be seen. For others, it’s simply having a good time while you step out of your comfort zone of wardrobe and mannerisms, to take a leap into a character’s shoes (figuratively and literally). Some people plan for Halloween for months beforehand as a meticulously anticipated event (cue the creepy organ and brain Jello molds). But, some people jump on the bandwagon of participation last minute (cue the ‘what’s in my closet…’ costume). No matter what your style is, the sky is the limit as to what you could go as.
My time training for Character and Special Effects Design in L.A. taught me about how every character needs a back story. One of the most imaginative things you can do to enhance your character when dressing up is to figure out their walk of life. It’s not just a black eye–she was injured in a car crash after her heart was broken and she drove away crying in a blizzard.
Heavy? Of course. Interesting? Definitely.
Then I got to see the evolution of the grand madness of Halloween enthusiasm during my 2.5 years as the Haunted Basement’s Special Effects Makeup Designer. People were hungry to learn easy makeup techniques for their Halloween ideas. Between that and the rise of October events in the Twin Cities over the past few years, Halloween designs have become both exciting and daunting. People came to my studio asking, “Well what should I be and how do I do that?”
Thus, we present you with this Halloween How-To resource guide. Inspired by popular shows and characters, we have put together accessible ideas for your makeup and costume options this season. Whether you are on a budget, don’t have a lot of time, want something easy, or want to go all out, there’s something for everyone. You can be ghoulishly sexy, terrifyingly gorey, smartly dressed, or fantastically funny. Your world awaits.
