As the days get shorter and cooler, we hardy Midwesterners start thinking about the ideal winter getaway.  We consider driving or flying to that perfect spot to unwind, relax and ignore the daily flood of emails. Maybe it’s a cabin in the woods or maybe that perfect place to watch the sun set. But, what if that perfect getaway location was only a few steps away?

The idea of creating a getaway within your home is not a new concept, but it is one worth revisiting. Family budgets are tight, down time is getting harder and harder to come by and airfare and gas prices are at an all-time high. “Getting away at home” is more important than ever. Outdoor spaces, with a fireplace as a heat source make a great getaway year around. There are few things more relaxing than the sound and smell of a wood fire. Add a comfortable chair as well as your favorite furry friend, and you have the makings of a Montana post card.

Splashing on the beach may not be achievable, but relaxing in a large soaking tub might just be what the doctor ordered for those stressed out muscles. Add some bubbles and a glass of wine to take the edge off. There’s a reason Viagra uses this image in their advertising.

Your destination could be as simple as a special reading nook; a place to curl up with a large bowl of ice cream and the most recent Nicholas Sparks novel. Creating an at home getaway does not need to be expensive, just a creative space that beckons you to vacation at home.

Absolutely beautiful. My boyfriend and I have been looking for ideas for outdoor spaces and love the one with the fireplace. We’re still in planning process, but will be moving forward in the spring.
