The Free Black Dirt experimental art collective will screen Sweetness of Wild at the Parkway Theater. This episodic film looks at black life, queerness, creativity, biking, laughter and the sweetness and wildness of Minneapolis. Other elements include black nuance in life on Dakota land, Prince celebrated as a sensuous divinity, and cosmic aspects of love and life.
Director-writer and collective cofounder Junauda Petras says, “Sweetness of Wild is a love letter to Minneapolis and the last five years of loss, transformation, healing, laughter, artmaking, love blossoming that has been ensconced within this geography. Free Black Dirt is excited to screen the first three installments in this project and share this work with our community and generate more momentum. We have been blessed to be in a city that has loved us and our Afro-futuristic, queer, feminist vision for art and look forward to sharing this experience with our village.”
Producer and the other collective co-founder Erin Sharkey adds, “We are so excited for this project that showcases the best of this area’s creative community. Music, dance, design, style. So much Black joy and magic.”
The screening event is a fundraiser for Sweetness of Wild’s completion and distribution. The evening will also include creative offerings from MMYYKK, Katie Robinson, Sarah White, Senah Yeboah-Sampong, Erin Sharkey, Yoni Light, Junauda Petrus, DJ Michel Be and others.
