I think you came to an important realization while working these thoughts out: if you (or anyone) disagree with any politicians’ policies or statements and you want something more, you have to make your voice heard.
Simple as that: You must be active or expect your voice to be ignored. Politicians have always served the groups with the most influence to get them where they want to be and I don’t see that changing in our country any time soon.
Like it or not we, as queer people are a minority and must work every day to make our issues and our voice understand and supported. While we’ve made extraordinary strides even within my lifetime, it is my opinion (and passion) that we have not gone far enough and it is our responsibility to truly embrace, believe and be motivated by that.
Obama’s statements and stance (or even McCain’s) does not offend me, because it’s my opinion that they still reflect the majority of American thinking. The real issue isn’t what they say, in my opinion, its what they’re saying about the general consensus they see to win votes.
The real work in my opinion does not lie in the promises of the 2008 presidential election, but what our overall compromises are. I sincerely wish everyone would at least become active locally and vote locally, because oddly enough that trickles up in our politician’s messages.
Change is always happening, regardless of who is elected, but knowing your own opinions and learning to have intelligent, impassioned discussions about them is the only way to instill real change.
On last thing, Wanda: Would you not have the same issue with Hilary regarding gay rights?
Assless chaps is redundant
OMG, Curt, I love you! I always think that when i hear it or say it. Bonus points!
The blending of religion and government didn’t just start in the last 8 years; it’s been a progressive tide ever since the Reagan years when the “cloth coat” Republicans lost control of their party to the radical evangelicals.
Wandita, I agree with almost everything you said! Sadly, however, I don’t think most gay men and women in this country really care all that much. Activism seems to have died when AIDS became a treatable illness. The majority seem entirely content in living their lives as second class citizens. I won’t even begin to tell you about the unbelievable hurdles we had to overcome and hoops we had to jump through as a gay couple when we adopted our kids. Talk about legalized discrimination! Most of the people we had to deal with were outwardly embarrassed but kept saying, “I’m sorry, we have to do it this way”.
I kind of disagree about the religious people not wanting the govt. in their lives. For most, that is probably true. But for the Fundamentalists who have hijacked our govt., this is exactly what they want. Their goal is complete moral control of the masses through legislation. I have a crazy, “born-again” fundie sister who belongs to one of those Cult Mega-Churches and the things that she says! Incredible!

I agree that the people should hold public officials accountable, but Obama IS by far the most pro-gay presidential candidate in American history.
Read about his positions. He is on the right side of every “gay issue” except (arguably) marriage. In particular, he supports a repeal of DOMA (Hillary did not, if I remember correctly) and he wants to extend FEDERAL RIGHTS to those in civil unions and gay marriages from CA/MA — that is HUGE. And frankly, that is the most the federal government can and should do. Marriage is a state issue, and the federal government simply should recognize valid marriages performed in any state, and provide rights/benefits that accompany them. That is Obama’s position — it is a revolution in gay rights.
Obama is not perfect, and I don’t know how much of his LGBT agenda he can get through Congress — our efforts should be focused on our senators and representatives, especially Democrats from conservative states.
Now, now, Wanda! Aren’t you being a little bit sexist by calling Gov. Palin a “soccer mom”? She has more executive experience in government than Obama, Biden OR McCain. And those of us outside Alaska barely know her at the moment. Shouldn’t we at least hear her out before making a judgment call? I’m just sayin’ . . .
RE: Marriage is a state issue, and the federal government simply should recognize valid marriages performed in any state, and provide rights/benefits that accompany them.
I always love it when people say the above. I wonder if we had left the right to discriminate against blacks to the state how that would have gone?
A state has no more right to discriminate and say no than does the federal government.
By definition it tells us where we should live to be treated equally.
omg, hillary2012 are you really michele bachmann? that’s exactly the line she was spreading on cnn last night. as for “executive” experience, i’ll take quality over quantity any day. and as for soccer mom, i apologize. i should’ve said “hockey mom.” that’s what she called herself in her first speech to the public.
Curse you, Michele Bachman, for stealing my line! I actually did not see her on CNN last night, but my sentiment is one I’ve been expressing since Gov. Palin was announced as McCain’s running mate. Glad there is someone — if not you, Wanda — who has the same viewpoint.
As for the “quality” of Palin’s political accomplishments versus Obama et al, well, I leave that to each voter to decide for him/herself. I’m still on the fence, honestly, about where my vote will go. I supported Hillary (big surprise), and Obama does not impress me. I’m still not seeing substance there. And I don’t like that McCain has been pandering to conservatives, but I have liked him in the past. In regard to Palin herself, personally, I think she has a kind of Everywoman cool (”hockeymom”-ness and all) that Hillary was never quite able to register, and I freeekin’ LOVE me some Hillary! We’ll see how well Palin fares in the coming weeks and in her debate with Biden. It’s a tough one IMHO.
Wanda, this particular pod cast and your views meant a lot to me as Eiain and I got married this past weekend. I have mentioned a few things on my blog about your pod cast which I totally was in agreement with you 100%. Thank you for passion with regards all that you spoke about! I wish we had more like you speaking the truth as it is. Thanks Luv. xx
Sadly, Fellow Lou Dobbs Hater, I think you need to read up on the 14th Amendment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Protection_Clause#Suspect_classes
The right to discriminate against black people WAS left to the states, and was only eradicated by the US Constitution via Supreme Court. Gay people don’t have constitutional protection, and that sucks, but that’s the way it is.
Of course government can discriminate - it does so all the time. And of course, if you want to move to MA or CA because you want equal rights, you can do so. You’re allowed to move from state to state.
I absolutely can not stand Obama. I would rather vote for Lou Dobbs than cast one for him. Seriously.
