UK discussion about apologies - it’s one of those things that’s always going to be awkward to discuss as it’s based around an ism. There’s grey areas abound in life and here’s another one. People find it easier to think in clearly delineated terms, that there’s black/white clear separations in arguments, and that’s not the case, it’s just sloppy thinking. It’s too easy to label things with binary good/bad labels. This means when there’s discussions about grey issues it’s too easy to label people ‘insensitive’ or ‘lacking empathy’ if they’re working things through while not constantly condemming the bad things that happened with the discussions subject matter.
I’m gay, and if I went over to anaother gay person and said ‘on behalf of this country I apologise for any homophobia you or anyone else has eperienced over the last 700 years’ they’d look at me as if I was a loon, but if I was heterosexual suddenly it’s not a loony thing to say?
If someone tried to pay me gay reparations I’d tell them to stop being silly and if they’re middle-class guilt is getting too much for them they can give it to a charity that can help people who are suffering just now.
