Ugh, Scalia. No one doubts that he is brilliant, but he is a total asshole. He goes on duck hunting trips with people whose cases he’s actually hearing. When he visited my school, he actually said that the constitution was there to protect the majority from the minority. He thinks it’s a dead document, and he is in every way an originalist. Of course that’s dandy for him because he is a strict catholic and the more conservative you can interpret things the better. Beyond that, the guy is downright mean and nasty. If you actually read his dissent in Lawrence, I think you would be surprised by how blatant his contempt and derision is. I think Scalia does understand that his mode of interpretation is flawed, but he sticks by it. No one living today could possibly believe that words have static meaning or that we can accurately deduce what things mean just by looking at history or dictionaries of the time. Beyond all the things he says, he is inconsistent himself. His jurisprudence regarding the 11th amendment is anything if not textual. God, can’t he just die! Well, maybe he could at least wait until there is someone else in office besides that warmongerer criminal we have now.
