John Ong made some good points… to add to the discussion. I must admit I’ve been guilty of playing down my gayness at times but not any more.
I’m actually bi, which muddies the waters a bit and I feel more gay on some days than others. I’m not a big nelly queen, but put me next to a straight guy and you’ll tell the difference.
I’ve always played down my gayness because it comes and goes and what has it do with anything anyway? Well, everything to do with me, as it turns out.
So now I don’t hold back. I let myself be whatever I am that day and say what I want. It’s really liberating.
Oh Wanda, I didn’t know this is going to get into the show today! Steve told me in our conversations tonight. Anyhway, I do agree with you that we can’t NOT making it an issue. I see your point. I also will follow by saying, “it doesn’t make it okay then to discriminate us”.
This reminds me of this t-shirt I saw one day on the street, “Straight-Pride”, sorta poking fun at us. It almost has the meaning of, straight people don’t have to proclaim their pride, why should gay people.” Well, that’s because there isn’t anyone discriminating against them for being straight.
And so, yes, we will have to make it political in this political environment.

My “screen name” should at least assure you I’m not lying about my real name. I decided on it along time ago and it stuck. I like the way it looks in print. And I’m not sure I could remember a thousand alais’s or have the patience for my right and left brain to come up with something new everytime I respond to something on the internet. You’ve made me feel o.k. about that little tangent…. from the blue…. so it’s not really a tangent then is it? I’ll stop.
It’s there. But my gaydar is always on the lookout for that speacial someone to share life with. Now I’ve somehow found myself practically a born again virgin (I know there’s no such thing) but figuratively speaking. That’s percieved as just plane wrong by alot of people gay and straight. Slowly, I’ve found some people starting to respect that that has become part of who I am at this time. No sex. Over five years now. To be clear. But for whatever reasons, that’s where I’m at, and it’s a huge stumbling block in trying to even make friends in the gay “community”. So other than the occasional listen to someone like yourself speaking of such things. I don’t personally find it important. Personally. Though I know the significance of our plight. And I do my humble part socially and liberally. All this makes me feel things I don’t care to feel. Basicly a misfit. Uneeded. Unwanted. A cast away from all communities. Even hated for whatever misperceptions arise if I in fact assert that I do exist. These are all feelings and perceptions I have to deal with often. Far too many times after what I wished would have been simple small talk. So identity. I have one. My personality is a mere light breeze to your magnimity (sp) (word?). Anyhow. Thanks for bringing this up and allowing me to take a second to look at my own…. and share my thoughts on it and it’s larger social roll. Take it easy.
You are taking on Identity/expression at this moment when I decided to pause the progrum and type.
I’ve been openly gay for 14 years yet it has rarely come up in lifes situations such as the workplace. I figure enough people would guess I might be. But mostly what I’m confronted with first on this issue is that I’m percieved to have an issue with it myself simply because I make no issue of it. I’ve been percieved as closeted (most often by young girls looking to have some fun outing me), somehow concieted… I guess because I’m quiet and not flamboyant or super easily identifiable as effeminant, or that I have some sort of personal issue regarding my same gender compatibility simply because I don’t discuss it. And I don’t discuss it because largly because there is nothing to discuss. I simply reveal my personal self as it becomes relevant in conversations and situations. I don’t see this as being even conservative. Just reasonable. Besides having to deal with that cloud of assumptions that I percieve hovering over me, that I can’t seem to whisk away from my psyche, being local gay in a community populated densly with procreating model citizens. And the sole gay person of my extended family. Besides that… I’ve HAD to deal with much hatred from the gay community (including assualts) really only because I’m kinda quiet. I’ve even been told straight out that I must think I’m something special… followed by a mild physical attack by some random fellow homosexual. Also there’s the whole sexuality thing. I’ve never really had an inherantly prominant sex drive. It surfaces appropriately.
