Ahhhh, such an interesting interview. The Podcaster who got me into podcasting, meets and talks with the podcaster who has called me a troll on several different forums and seems to be convinced I hate him.

Ragan is very provocative to me. I appreciate and respect his work, I wouldn’t say I hate him because I don’t know him personally (I never got a chance to talk to him personally because secretly, I was scared of what would happen if I ever tried to IM or GMail him after our first relatively heated interaction… and the first time I DID gmail him too many nasty words had been exchanged). I’m pretty sure I laughed for every show I listened to… unfortunately the times I decided to speak out and go “wow, I think this opinion is especially fucked up” I got really burned, In retrospect, most of it was because I fell pray to a visceral need to be nasty the way that Ragan Fox’s character was nasty:

The first few times I commented on anything in Ragan’s show I think it was pretty bland stuff… things like “I think you should name your combo-show with Rachel Kann Fabulocity” (answering a request for name suggestions)… I might have disagreed with some other points but he never said anything (I think in one eat-bird show he made a reference to someone “not getting it” but I don’t know if that was me) but the first really bad time I remember having with Ragan was on a show where he got on the “straight acting” phenomenon. Instead of just coming into his forum and saying “I dunno if this is even a valid counterargument under the guise of your mean-spirited character, it just doesn’t hold up considering your sample data is porn and Gay.com… which are sketchy by nature so I’m not sure if this is a fair evaluation even for the character you portray”. Instead I was bad, decided to get attention, and started my argument with a very brutal, diserspectful ad-hominem attack figuring “if he gets to be a jackass character, so do I.” It was all downhill from there.

I guess from that point, I could never tell whether Ragan’s comments were Ragan or “the character”. There had been a lot more nastiness since that point (namely because I continued coming to the same forums and taking up the issues I had with his podcast being a tremendous jackass) … and I’ve since tried to revert to a point where I am speaking personally instead of some crazy flamey troll who just happened to be good at getting on Ragan’s (or Ragan’s character’s) nerves. Needless to say, I didn’t lose much of my vitriol, and instead just got to the root of the issues I had with him/his character: So many of his comments were just so mean spirited and unempathetic, and I wasn’t able to sort out what was fantasy anymore… so I was just blasting everything on principal.

Otherwise, I’m not sure it’s fair for a podcaster to dichotomize their listeners. I don’t feel like I was a person who hated Ragan’s show and what Ragan was about… I just disliked certain peices and points that I felt were beyond the realm of ridicule and situational mockery that Ragan had staked out originally…. and I guess since I felt I was getting transferred into some “doesn’t get it” bucket by protesting. I figured I would become a provocative farce myself as a test to see if THAT would get me noticed as more than the standard nay-sayer… Unfortunately, it got me noticed in comPLETEly the wrong ways… I was being mean, and I was hurting feelings, and I hate that.

Regardful, I love Ragan real. It’s no longer just giggling and laughing at absurdities thrown out by the character alongside that perverse trepidation that he might piss me off… it’s sympathy for the fucked-upped-ness of the details behind Ragan’s breakup… it’s appreciation for the mold-breaking for the idea that as a gay man I have to be a thin, masc, top. I guess I always had issues with “the character” and am glad to see that he’s leaving, and will make sure to throw mine into the shredder as well. I look forward to hearing you on ETHS.

This was one of your better podcasts, Wanda.

It was nice to hear what Ragan had to say about this break from podcasting. If and when Ragan returns to podcasting his own show, if it is anything like it was today, then I’m really looking forward to it. I like the humor, but I also like it when people are reflective and put down the schtick to let others know other things about themselves.

You’re a good interviewer Wanda. I’m enjoying how things are developing with this move to Lavender. Good work, folks!

A gay podcaster with a PHD who can say “Delicious Bottomy Goodness” and not skip a beat is pretty cool in my book.

We should never be afraid to step out of our comfort zones and re-invent ourselves…

I listened to FM radio in my car for the first time in months and could not believe how awful it was to listen to compared to the stream of quality gay podcasts I listen to on my iPod…

Keep up the good work and thank you.

    Hello Wanda!

Your old blogging friend Jimmy, here in Chicago. I just wanted to drop a good word to you and join in your celebration with the beautiful new website and new full-time gig of podcast. Good for you, girl!

Thank you Wanda for the fabulous recommendation to Lady Rapatastic! Hilarious!

Wanda, I hope you don’t bond at the hip with the other podcasters that you make reference to in most of your podcasts- Wanda, you have enough talent to carry your own. And, if I may say so, the most talented. At least most entertaining. One can only take so much of listening to vulgar words for the “shock value” (honey, that shock value ran out three bagels ago…) but you have some content that actually carries. Yes, CONTENT. (say it right)

Big SMOOCHES to you! We’ll all be listening.

There were some very good things said in this podcast, you are at your best when the podcasts have some “meat”

honee…i never thought of the connection between a bottom, a drag queen, and a lesbian! the FEMININE! what an interesting discussion today. i agree… people who diss the femmes bug me out. get in touch, people! the thing inside people that provokes anti-femme attitudes within the gay community is the same thing that fuels homophobia among the het community. fear of the feminine… a misperception that the feminine is inferior or shameful. PUHLEEZE!

i just hope everyone can heal that part of themselves that fears the feminine…and i am so grateful that i at least keep an open mind about it! :-)

wonderful episode…and i LOVE RAGAN!!! may he be protected from haters…

This was an amazing episode. Not only was what both of you had to say so… insightful/inspiring, Ragan’s performance of ‘Heterophobia’ was and is… there are hardly words to describe it.

Great episode, good, thought-provoking discussion with honesty and humor. I continue to be excited by Wanda’s new opportunities and growth, but I’ll admit to being sad about Ragan’s hiatus even though it’s totally understandable. And quite selfish of me, in fact, since he absolutely should put his own well-being first and trust his creative instincts.

I think you both are doing great things and I really appreciate how much both of you share your thoughts and creativity and energy with us.
